Container  Innovation


Imagine the ground suddenly moving beneath you and the world around you falling, cracking and crumbling. For the residents of New Zealand’s city of Christchurch, this was a reality in February, 2011. A devastating earthquake hit the central city, destroying many buildings and taking the lives of over 300 people.

New Zealanders have always been known for their pioneering spirit, their hard working ethic and innovative thinking. It wasn’t long before architects and entrepreneurs joined forces to try and get Christchurch back on its feet quickly. The Re:START project was born.

It would take a very long time for new buildings to be constructed and it was important to encourage people back into the centre of the city. Shipping containers for shops was the answer! Using great ingenuity, rectangular shipping containers were transformed into shops, banks and restaurants.

START has grown steadily over the past few years, increasing from 27 businesses at the opening in October 2011, to well over 50 businesses today. In addition there are market stalls, street performers and buskers.

Across the world shipping containers have provided inspiration for other building projects, particularly as people seek smaller housing solutions. Here are just a few!
