Jingle Bells, jingle bells… Christmas is coming! We encourage you to be different this year and build your very own Christmas tree. This D.I.Y. project is perfect for kids to develop their engineering and design skills! Below are some cool ideas ideas that you can use for inspiration!

The Plastic Bottle Tree

What you’ll need:

  • Clear plastic bottles
  • Some paint and a paint brush (green and white but feel free to add your own colours!)
  • Scissors and a cutter
  • Glue or a glue gun- even better if you have one

How to make it:

Have a look at the video below for an easy step-by-step guide:

The Recycled Light Bulb Tree

What you’ll need:

  • Traffic cone
  • Fairy lights (like the ones you find on a regular Christmas tree)
  • Plastic bag to fit inside cone
  • Light bulbs
  • Strong glue
  • Rag

How to make it:

  1. Gather your materials listed above.
  2. Line the inside of the traffic cone with your plastic bag.
  3. Glue each bulb together one-by-one and place inside the upside-down cone, keeping the sides of the bulbs facing upwards where possible (this may take a little bit of time!).
  4. Glue the last row of bulbs and leave room in the middle of these so as the fairy lights will fit. You can use the rag to keep the bulbs in place!
  5. Let the glue set for a few hours, then carefully remove the bulbs from the cone.
  6. Add the fairy lights to the space you’ve left in the middle of the last row.
  7. Plug in the fairy lights and admire your new tree!

The Origami Three

What you’ll need:

  • 5 sheets of paper in the following sizes:
    • two 15cm squares
    • one 12cm square
    • one 9.5cm square
    • one 7.5cm square, green and brown kami (standard origami paper)

How to make it:

Check out the video below for how to create this awesome tree. This might take some more time than the others but is definitely worth it!

The Gumdrop Tree

What you’ll need:

  • Gumdrops (try to pick a bag with green ones on it)
  • Toothpicks
  • Bamboo skewers (or spaghetti!)

How to make it:

  1. Draw the structure on a paper. Keep in mind that triangles are strong and that larger bases support more weight.
  2. Try to recreate your draw.
  3. Create the tallest freestanding structure!
  4. Id it doesn’t work, try again! Failing is great for better learning! 😉
  5. Think about the building process. What worked and what would you do differently next time.
